Sir Alex Ferguson has praised Jose Mourinho as a very talented manager despite his struggles in his first season at Manchester United.
The Portuguese coach was appointed as Louis van Gaal’s successor back in May 2016 after Manchester United finished in fifth position in the Premier League table.
Mourinho signed Eric Bailly, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba in the 2016 summer transfer window after which they spend over £150m on new players.
The Red Devils have struggled in his first campaign in charge at Old Trafford after Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table on Sunday.
Manchester United however won the EFL Cup at Wembley in February thanks to a 3-2 win against Southampton, while Ajax are standing in the way of Mourinho and Europa League glory.
Speaking to the League Managers’ Association about Mourinho’s impact at Old Trafford this season, Ferguson defended the Portuguese coach’s record in the Premier League.
“He is a very talented manager, there’s no question,” Ferguson told LMA.
“They’ve done really well. If six of those draws were turned into wins, it would be 12 points. They’d be up there.
“Hopefully we can start winning things because I’m sure that’s what he wants.”
Manchester United haven’t won the Premier League title since Ferguson stepped down as manager in 2013.
